Isla San Ildefonso is a remote island, about 2 1/2 hours steaming time, south of Mulege. It lies on the outside of Punta Concepcion in very deep water. The depth is what attracts some of the larger pelagics in the Sea of Cortez. We can be fortunate to see Manta, Mobula and various whale and shark species.
As it is a marine sanctuary, it is not only protected dues to it's remoteness, but also, thankfully as a nature reserve. The warm currents that push north in the summer provides a perfect environment for the Giant Rock Scallops and other invertebrate life along its shores. For the twitchers, you can also see an amazing selection of bird populations including the Western Seagulls, Herrmann's Gulls, California Pelicans, a variety of Tern species, Cormorants, Frigate birds, and the ever playful Boobies.
Due to the travel time involved in getting to such a remote island, we only offer this trip as a prearranged 2 or 3 day "aquaventure". We post our schedules for the trips here (the trip section). The trips involve camping, either under a grass shelter locally called a Palapa, or in tents (to stave off the wind more than any other element). It is a chance to experience a night sky where the closest electric light to pollute the air may well be 30 miles in any direction. We depend on the weather to dictate much of the diving, and so we plan the trips primarily in the least windy season, September through October.
We endeavor got get in two boat dives each day, as well a shore or night dive, if people are interested. The diving in intermediate to advance around the island, however snorkelers can also have a wonderful time out there. A maximum of 6 divers per trip provides for an intimate setting of diving and companionship. Check out our current schedule and pricing information here.
