What did you see on your Advanced course..?
It was an early morning dive. We had one final deep dive to accomplish with our Advanced Diver student and with the thought in our heads to get a few dives in on his final days of his vacation, we decided to make it an early boat dive. So we met at the Palomita at 0600 and by 0630 we were under way, heading out to a new dive spot we like to call Punta Pelagic.
Unlike most Mulege mornings where the sun rises on a flat sea, this one proved to be quite the opposite. With about a 2 foot rolling sea out at the point, Matthew, the boatman for the morning, decided to have the divers roll over the side and do a free decent to the bottom, 90 feet below. This allowed Matthew to place the Palomita closer into shore and wait for the divers to come up along the reef edge.
After a top-side briefing, Mick and Mark rolled over the side and descended down to 90 feet where they were to perform a couple of exercises to show the effects of pressure at depth. These tricks I will keep quiet about, needless to say, they involved two eggs and a soda bottle! After the exercises were complete, they started their slow climb up the wall. Visibility was great and the marine life was abundant. As Mick looked up to catch his bearings using the sun, he noticed a cloud gathering overhead. As he obtained Marks attention they sat on the bottom, in awe, as over 50 Mobula swam over their heads and followed the contours of the reefs edge.
As usual, the divers returned from the dive wishing only one thing, that they had had a camera to record the events. This was really something special. So as per our name for the location, Punta Pelagic really lived up to its reputation and provided something special to a training dive that capped off a great few days of diving for one of our advanced students.
So if you have nothing better to do for a long weekend, come and join us for a short break and increase your enjoyment in the water by taking one of our Advanced Diving classes. Remember we are just a short flight from San Diego and LAX.
Over 60 PADI Certifications, with youngest yet added to our ranks.
At the age of 10 Emma Chapman, Mick's daughter, entered the ranks of PADI Junior Diver last month, completing a school vacation that included swimming with Sea Lions, diving on wrecks and teaching her younger sister, Thea, to snorkel. Emma is a great example of children having just as easy a time of learning to dive as any adult. After years of watching her parents dive, she is finally able to join them in the fun and family business!
Thea, Emma's sister (pictured in Pink), was also present at Cortez Explorers for the summer and while still too young to dive, she has gained so much confidence in the water that she could be 'heard' singing through her snorkel, while watching the divers below...
Emma's certification along with many others, have helped Cortez Explorers surpass their certification goal for the year. We are in the happy position of having to re-evaluate our goals for the remainder of this year and into the future. So come join the numbers who have already found out that learning to dive, or continuing your education, with us is a worthwhile experience.
Important information regarding Christmas hours & Holiday Thanks!!
Mick, our only fulltime instructor, will be gone from December 20th, till January 5th, visiting his daughters in Europe. Our dive operations will continue with Matthew and Chris leading dives. However of note is the fact that we will not be offering PADI courses over that period.
Anyone wishing to to join us for a Christmas day dive will be most welcome!
Last, but not least, a message from Mick: This is just to say a massive "Thank You" to all the divers and personal friends out there who contacted Maria and myself immediately after the flooding in September, and offering every kind of help from coming down here to work on the house, work at the Dive Centre, wash, clean etc etc. Also those of you who not only volunteered, but actually made it down here with your tins of stew, coffee, spare parts etc etc etc. It is fair to say that we made many new friends this last two months, and we want to thank you all for your thoughts, phone calls, emails and practical help. There are simply too many of you decent divers out there to mention by name.
You are ALL very appreciated.
Maria and Mick
